What sets visitors apart who come to Nicaragua is the amount of you who want to help and give something back to the country.  We’re always amazed how many people are keen to offer their time to help, so we’ve assembled a listing of some of the different charities out here that would love to hear from you.  Give them a call.

The Barrio Planta Project

The Barrio Planta Project, a community development initiative, assists in the growth of the low-income neighborhood "La Planta" in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.  Through education, job-training, and community development, the residents of "La Planta" are given the building blocks to create and maintain a successful and rewarding life.

How can you help?

We are in need of donations to help pay for materials, hire teachers and ensure the longevity of our project. What your money buys:

School supplies. Pens, notebooks, folders, photocopies, paper, extra dry-erase boards, books, and possibly one day, our own school.  Basketball equipment - Basketballs, sneakers (the kids have none), uniforms.  Art supplies. Paint for the murals, paintbrushes, coloring stuff, Room and Board for Volunteers.  Field trips, snacks, event planning, future theater, music, and poetry projects, family events

Want to donate?  Here are a few ways to do so:

1. Donate directly to the Planta Project. This way, the full gift is received, with no percentages deducted from our parent non-profit. This gift is not tax-deductible. This option is recommended for small donations. The donation button can be found on the right menu button.

2. Donate through the HJH Libraries for All Program, our parent non-profit. Please note that while your gift will be tax-deductible this way, 5% goes to the Just Give Foundation, and 10% goes to HJH Libraries itself. If you choose this option, you must designate donations to the Barrio Planta Project, or all of your gift goes to the library.

3. Donate materials. Here is our wishlist:

Gym clothes (the kids come to class in jeans, which hinders their athletic ability).  Gym sneakers (none of the kids have them).  Old sports equipment.  Any school or art supplies.  Costumes and clothes in general.  ESL books

Peace Passers

We believe all people have potential. By maximizing human capabilities, daily experiences become sources of joy. Playing sports influences quality of life, thus promoting mutual respect, unity, and peacefulness with human relationships. The culture of soccer allows people to gain insight into positive connections with peers, family, & community. Passion for the game and people becomes parallel.

Soccer balls, shoes, socks and uniforms are needed. This can be done through direct contribution of supplies and/or through monetary donations for shipping fees. There is no greater feeling than passing joy and peace on to others. We challenge you to share that joy, to join us in spreading the peaceful vibe through donating soccer supplies to countries and areas less fortunate than our own. Thank you for considering our cause.  Also Surfboard donations & Beach Cleanups / Recycle Programs

Stones & Waves Wildlife Sanctuary

A partner to Piedras y Olas Hotel, our sanctuary consists of a veterinary clinic and houses a variety of Nicaraguan wildlife and domesticated animals. Unfortunately many of our current wildlife cannot be released back into their natural habitat for various reasons. Taking this into account we are committed to giving them the best life possible and to educate others on wildlife and animal care.

Our key objectives are the following:
    * Provide free spay & neuter services to control the population of unwanted, uncared for and sick animals
    * Offer no fee animals services to local residents
    * Provide a safe haven for abandoned, injured and/or sick animals
    * To establish a regular rotation of veterinarians through our clinic

Our goals for the near future are to:
    * Provide educational opportunities & programs for the community & individuals in the veterinary and/or wildlife profession
    * Strive for the conservation, protection, &research of wildlife
    * Promote & assist in the creation & management of protected wildlife habitat

    * Foster an attitude of anti-animal cruelty among local youth
    * Discourage the practice of utilizing wild animals as pets

We are always looking for local sponsors and support.  If you would like to help us fundraise or if you would like to show visitors our facilities and learn more, please let us know.
All donations are greatly appreciated whether it is financial or simply an item packed in your suitcase. Toys and treats are always welcome!
For a list of specific materials and/or supplies that we currently need please contact us. Thank you for helping those who cannot help themselves!

Fundación A. Jean Brugger

The Fundación A. Jean Brugger is a nonprofit foundation &
partner of the Piedras y Olas Hotel, devoted to assisting Nicaragua through education and development of one of the country's most valuable and treasured resources: its young people. Our mission is to provide critical educational opportunities and vocational training for the residents of San Juan del Sur and surrounding communities. The Foundation's primary goal is to educate and empower individuals and build a base of knowledge and awareness of crucial social, cultural, and environmental issues. Recognizing that the ongoing development and economic progress of Nicaragua rests on future generations.

How to Get Involved
The Foundation is actively seeking donations of funds and educational supplies to support its efforts. Donors can get involved in any number of ways, including:
    * School Uniform Project: US $30 provides a (mandatory in Nicaragua) school uniform and shoes for a student. To sponsor uniforms for an entire school costs just US $1,350! All uniforms are made locally by women in the community, providing additional jobs and local financial support.
    * Scholarship Fund: Sponsor an individual secondary school student by providing US $30 per month for tuition, or US $75-200 per month for a year for a university student. Sponsors receive information about their student and have the opportunity to correspond with or meet the students whenever possible.
    * School Supplies & Books: Students — and their schools need school supplies, books, clothing, backpacks, and other basic goods for their education. Contact us for the current supplies "wish list."
    * Community & Environmental Projects: The Foundation's ten-acre nature reserve offers a unique way for the students and surrounding community to learn about nature and long-term preservation efforts. Funds and supplies are needed to facilitate reforestation projects, construction of nature trails, and more. Additionally, annual student-driven community projects — such as trash collection, water management, and ecology education — often require specific types of supplies, tools, or resources.
    * Vocational Training: Individuals with experience in the areas of ecology, environmental education, tourism, hospitality, construction, business administration, and others are excellent sources of education and training for students. If you are interested in volunteering your time in Nicaragua to train students in a variety of professional areas, please contact us.
