Food! Hearty market lunches and delicious dinner at the Chicken lady
It's easy to eat well and cheaply in San Juan del Sur when you know where to go. By far one of the best value meals you can get would be at the local market in the centre of town. Not only do they serve you up a tasty large portion of everything from fresh fish to grilled chicken they also give you additional extras such as rice, beans, avocado, salad, fried plantain and cheese. If you have any special eating requirements, they will cater to your every need. Meals are generally between $3-$5 depending on what you have. Make sure to try the fresh Tamarind Juice. Also, stick to the same stand every day and you'll be sure to get given extra treats on your plate as a thank you as the days go on.

Possibly one of the best ways to get to the know the country is to stay in a home-stay with a local family. You'll learn the language twice as fast, make friends for life, and the cost of living with meals included is considerably cheaper. Buy big bottles of beer. You'll save a lot of money and the environment while your at it too!
In most Pulperias (local grocery stores) you will have the option to buy large bottles of beer. The idea is you pay a tiny bit more on your first purchase but you get a considerable amount discounted from your next beer when you return the empty bottle.
Make sure you don't throw finished bottles in the trash, large or small, as they can always be recycled. |

Make sure to buy a bag of this is the morning and take it in your backpack, for wherever your daily adventure is takes you - you will thank yourself later on guaranteed!

Every day there is a different happy hour in a different bar across town. This just doesn't just apply to drinks but sometimes snacks and meals too. So be sure to look out for advertisments around town and outside bars and restaurants.
A great place to keep on track of this is in the 'Del sur' Newspaper you will find all over town.
